THANK GOD FOR HIS LEADING
Today marks another milestone in the short history of Berith B-P church. Once again, we are “on the move” - this time to the city centre.
This move was not initiated by us but by the Lord; He worked in a special way to direct our path: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3: 5-6).
Some months back, we were told by Grace BPC that the Session had proposed plans to fully renovate the premises to accommodate their growing congregation. Though in the pipeline, the project will probably start at the end of this year, and it will be necessary to vacate the premises for the renovation. With no place to go, we sought the Lord in prayer. By His grace, we were able to secure a conference room at GCF premises at North Bridge Centre for our Sunday worship service. Thank God for His timely provision.
We recount God’s leading over the years. In July 2000, Berith started out as a congregation with the blessing of our late Rev (Dr) Timothy Tow. We began our worship at The Salvation Army Conference Centre at Upper Changi Road. After two months, we moved to a shop-house unit of a brethren church (Faith Mission Home) in Lorong 11. Subsequently, we relocated to the premises of Eden BPC at Lorong 25A, Geylang, a short walk from the Aljunied MRT station.
Sometime in May 2003, Eden BPC gave notice for us to move because they required our afternoon slot for an additional service. Again we prayed much. This time, the Lord led us to Grace BPC. After hearing about our plight, their Pastor and Session members graciously agreed to house us. We thank God that, in August 2003, Berith moved her worship service and ministry to Grace BPC. It was while we were at Grace that we applied for registration with the Registrar of Societies, Singapore. In May 2007, Berith BPC became a legal entity.
How do we view our constant move? Do we sometimes wonder when we are going to find a permanent place? To be realistic, it is difficult for most churches in Singapore to buy a property outright because of the high prices. It may be the Lord’s will for us to “wander” from place to place for the moment. One thing is certain. Someday, we will be going to our heavenly home where we will be eternally with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We take comfort that we have an eternal home in the New Jerusalem, the beautiful City of God. Until that glorious day when our blessed hope becomes a reality, we await its coming with eager anticipation. Meanwhile, let us sojourn here faithfully, pressing on in the work of the Lord.
Brethren, we know not when the Lord will provide us with a permanent home. However, where He leads us, we are to be His witnesses. He places us as He deems fit. Let us seek God’s grace to fulfil His plan and purposes for us as a church. Be encouraged by the words of Apostle Paul: “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord” (I Cor. 15: 58).
Let us therefore shine forth the light of God’s grace in this new place. Let us also make every effort to evangelise the vicinity. Our Lord said to His disciples: “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few” (Matt. 9: 27). May we be numbered among the “few” who are willing to sow the Gospel seed. Bring some tracts with you (you can get them at the Reception Table); determine to give out at least one each week. May each of us do our part to speak a good word for our Lord or to invite someone to church. Serve the Lord while it is yet day for “the night cometh when no man can work” (Jn. 9: 4). Amen.

“Too long I’ve laid me down to sleep;
And prayed the Lord my soul to keep.
I should awake before I die
And realise time is passing by.
I should arise and go and tell the lost;
Despite my plans, despite the cost!
Too long I’ve laid me down to sleep
While multitudes about me weep.
I must awake before I die
And realise my time is passing by”
